Brazilian Honeybees

- Inside the cells :where the queen puts its eggs, and worker bees deposits honey, propolis is used to make it stronger and for desinfection;

- In openings: Avoiding invaders like ants, beetles, and mites entrance to prejudice the hive integrity,
contaminating it;

- In hive cleaning: when an invader is neutralized inside the hive, and it cannot be brought out by the bees, they cover it with propolis, to avoid putrefaction, and consequent hive contamination.

For these reasons, the greeks named this substance as

"in favor" of the "city" or - in favor of the hive.

There are several species of honeybees in Brazil. We can divide it in 2 major categories. Honey bees with sting and the stingless.
- Brazilian stingless honey bees:
Compared with the common honey bee are smaller, mainly from the Trigona and Melipona genres.
Its hives are made inside the hollow of trees, or galleries in the ground. Their hives are smaller comparing to the normal honey bee. For its low productivity and difficult domestication, its products are not easily found and are not comercialized in industrial scale. But it has a very important function, polinizing inumerous species of brazilian flora.
- Brazilian honey bees with stings:
- Origins:
Honey bees with stings didn't exist in Brazil. Today, we can say that brazilian honey bees with stings are the result of several crossbreeds between european and african honey bees species, brought in the past.

The introduction of european honey bees is atributted to the jesuits. They first brought it from Portugal in 1839 to the State of Rio de Janeiro. In 1845 german immigrants also brought it from Germany to brazilian's south States. In 1870 and 1880, the State of Rio Grande do Sul received more honey bees from Italy, and in 1895 immigrants also brought it to the State of Pernambuco. There were many more occasions , but there are no registries of it.

Then, in 1956 researchers brought african honey bees to the State of São Paulo, trying to improve honey productivity.

Soon, this african bees crossbreed with european species, generating an hybrid, which remakable vitality made it nowadays, the most popular bee specie between the Paralels 35ºN and 35ºS of the earth. The Africanized Honey Bee - brazilian born.

- Characterisctics:

European honey bees are not so agressive. They resist much better to low temperature wheather, while brazilian bees are extremelly agressive and don't adapt to cold weather, prefering hotter temperatures.

Brazilian honey bees has higher resistence to commom european bees diseases. In Brazil, the great majority of beekeepers don't need to use ANY antibiotic in the treatment of their hives. If a hive gets ill, they change its weak queen and let nature do its job. This way, hives mantain its resistence naturally, and do not adquire antibiotic resistence.

Its vitality also shows results in productivity. Its action range are wider, and its honey, propolis and other bee products are remarkably higher either.

- Commercial apiculture:

Today, Brazil is one of the biggest bee products suppliers in the world. Among bee products we can list honey, propolis, api venom, royal jelly, polen and bee wax. Honey and Propolis are the most commercialized in volume.

The resistence and vitality of brazilian honey bees allied to Brazil's remarkable flora diversity, the rich hydric resources, the adequate weather and altitude, creates the ideal conditions to produce propolis of extremelly good quality.
